Virgin Atlantic Review 2026: Upper Class & Flying Club

By Emma Walsh 14 min read
Quick Answer

Virgin Atlantic is the most characterful way to cross the Atlantic from the UK — Upper Class on the A350-1000, the Clubhouse at Heathrow, and service with genuine personality earn it a loyal following that BA's more corporate product doesn't always match. The trade-off is a fleet of just 43 aircraft, no global alliance, and a route map focused on leisure and transatlantic rather than global business connectivity.

Virgin Atlantic is a British long-haul carrier founded by Richard Branson in 1984, operating from a London Heathrow base with a compact fleet of Airbus A350-1000s, A330-900neos, and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. Unlike British Airways, Virgin belongs to no global alliance — it relies instead on a deep joint venture with Delta Air Lines and codeshare partnerships with Air France-KLM. For UK travellers who primarily fly transatlantic, Virgin offers a credible and often superior alternative to BA; for global connectivity beyond North America and select leisure routes, the network is narrower.

Upper Class is Virgin's front cabin and the product around which the brand is built. On the A350-1000, the Cirrus NG suite offers direct aisle access in a 1-2-1 layout with a partial privacy door, dine-on-demand catering, and The Loft — a genuine onboard social bar unmatched by any competitor. FlightLogic's LHR–LAX Upper Class review scored it 8.7/10, praising the Clubhouse ground experience and warm service while noting the door oversells its own privacy. On older 787 and A330 aircraft, the product is older but still competitive.

Premium Economy is a genuine Virgin strength — the airline pioneered the cabin category and its product remains one of the best in the industry, with wider seats, dedicated cabin crew, and enhanced catering that justifies the fare premium over economy on long-haul routes. Skytrax named Virgin Atlantic the World's Best Premium Economy Class Airline in 2025.

Flying Club is Virgin's loyalty programme, using Virgin Points as currency. Points can be earned via Virgin Atlantic flights, Virgin Money co-brand credit cards (Reward and Reward+), and transfers from Amex Membership Rewards at a 1:1 ratio. Redemptions cover Virgin Atlantic reward flights plus a wide range of experiences and hotels via Virgin Red. Status tiers (Red, Silver, Gold) unlock lounge access, bonus points, and enhanced voucher value on Virgin credit cards. Unlike Avios, Virgin Points do not transfer to other airline programmes — you are committed to the Virgin ecosystem once you earn.

The Clubhouse at Heathrow Terminal 3 is Virgin's flagship ground product and one of the strongest reasons to choose the airline. A la carte dining (no buffet), spa treatments, Somadome meditation pods, and runway-facing Gallery seating survived a 2026 refurbishment intact. Access is restricted to Upper Class passengers and Flying Club Gold members — Virgin tightened entry rules in recent years, removing card-based lounge access. For UK261, Virgin Atlantic delays of 3+ hours on UK-regulated flights trigger the same £220–£520 compensation tiers as any other carrier.

Before you pack — pre-trip essentials

Flight and hotel links convert late. Finance, FX, insurance, and gear decisions happen weeks earlier — when professionals budget for long-haul stays. These picks fund FlightLogic without touching editorial scores.

Is Virgin Atlantic a good airline?

Strong on transatlantic Upper Class, Clubhouse lounges, and crew service. Smaller network than BA; SkyTeam membership since 2023 expands partner options.

Virgin Atlantic vs British Airways?

Virgin for premium experience and Clubhouse; BA for route coverage and Avios. Upper Class vs Club Suite is route- and aircraft-dependent.
